(Coos Bay) – Experience on the stage showed in the first night of eliminations for the 14 contestants competing for the title of Bay Area Teen Idol 2010. The music genre was “country.” And, the audience of more than 200 enjoyed country favorites including “Fireflies,” “Any Man of Mine,” “What Hurts the Most” and “Temporary Home.” But it was John Michael Montgomery’s “Be My Baby Tonight” performed by Thaddeus Miller that took top score. Miller from Bandon made it to the finals last year and is no new-comer to the stage. His vocals coupled with his use of facial expression and the stage not only won over the panel of judges, but the audience as well.

Miller was followed up by Caitlin Mansfield, 16, of Coos Bay. Mansfield performed Carrie Underwood’s version of “That’s Where it Is.” She was outside of the top three last week, but showed other contestants that the top three can be easily achieved by listening to the comments from the judges and working with the music coach.

17-year-old Sean O’Connor of North Bend is the only contestant so far to make it into the top three two weeks in a row. His rendition of Martina McBride’s, “Independence Day” was also a crowd pleaser as was his opening solo in the group song “Lean On Me!” O’Connor moved to the bay area earlier this year and attends North Bend High School.

In the end, it was 14-year-old Jessica Guirado of Coos Bay who was eliminated from the competition by disqualification. A contestant who does not perform for the competition is immediately disqualified. She will be invited back to perform in the songs that she has rehearsed with the group for the past several weeks.

Other standouts at Thursday’s contest were Ally Putas, 14 of Coos Bay who performed “Travelin’ Soldier,” 14-year-old Lauryn Hoyt of Coquille who performed Faith Hill’s “Fireflies” and 15-year-old Corin Wesman of Coquille who performed another song by Carrie Underwood “Temporary Home.”

Bay Area Teen Idol is a drug, alcohol and tobacco free summertime event for Coos County youth between the ages of 13 and 18. It is a vocal competition that features a different music genre each week. Contestants perform a series of group songs that Thursday night featured the Glee version of “Lean on Me,” “Footloose,” the Doobie Brothers “Listen To The Music” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop.” All contestants voluntarily sign a pledge to remain drug, alcohol and tobacco free throughout the contest. They also encourage good behaviors from their friends and fellow teens.

The next program takes place next Thursday at6:00 pm at the historic Egyptian Theatre. Admission is a suggested $2.00 that helps support the program. The music genre for the next program is a “Classic Hits” tune that would be played on the K-DOCK Radio Play list. Bay Area Teen Idol is sponsored by Bay Area Together for Youth, Coos County Commission on Children and Families, K-DOCK Radio (92.9 FM) and Fred Meyer.
