(Coos Bay) – It was a night of Percy Sledge, Three Dog Night, Linda Ronstadt, Beatles, Creedence Clearwater and Queen as 14 contestants of Bay Area Teen Idol continued their quest for the best in the third round of the weekly competition by performing a hit from the K-DOCK Radio Playlist.
In the end it was Marissa Cato on top for the second week since the contest started. Cato wowed the judges with Linda Ronstadt’s, “You’re No Good,” and was complimented on good diction that she has struggled with since the beginning. The comment sent the 14-year-old from Coos Bay flying off the stage with excitement.
Cato was followed by 15-year-old Corin Wesman of Coquille who brought down the house with her interpretation of the Classic Aretha Franklin tune, “Baby I Love You.” Wesman has also been in the top three two times since the contest started.
14-year-old Thaddeus Miller of Bandon also remained in the top three after placing first in the competition last week. Miller performed his version of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen.
The second elimination round ended with two contestants being removed from competition. Linda Brewer of Coos Bay who performed Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and Ashley McBroom were eliminated from the contest. Both will be invited back to perform group songs.
Judges Dennis Lindahl, Barbara Boots and Kathleen Zappelli stepped up constructive criticism that is designed to help contestants improve each week, one even contestants need to bring their best performances to the stage each week. At this point a contestant’s ability to perform a particular music genre can move them from first to worst in one night. But, that will be tough for this week’s number one contestant, since Cato who was in the contest last year knows how to apply the techniques given to her by the judges.
Bay Area Teen Idol is a drug, alcohol and tobacco free summertime event for Coos County youth between the ages of 13 and 18. It is a vocal competition that features a different music genre each week.
