Oregon Public Health issues advisory for Tenmile Lake
High algae levels found in Coos County Tenmile Lake.  A health advisory prompted by high algae levels found in Tenmile Lake, located 10 miles north of North Bend, was issued Thursday by Oregon Public Health and Coos County Health Department officials.  Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. These algae levels are likely to be associated with dangerous toxin concentrations in the water, according to World Health Organization guidelines.  Swallowing or inhaling water droplets should be avoided, as well as skin contact with water by humans or animals.  Drinking water from Tenmile Lake is especially dangerous. Oregon Public Health officials advise campers and other Tenmile Lake visitors that toxins cannot be removed by boiling, filtering or treating the water with camping style filters.  People who draw in-home water directly from Tenmile Lake are advised to use an alternative water source because private treatment systems are not proven effective in removing algae toxins. However, public drinking water systems can reduce algae toxins through proper filtration and disinfection. If people on public water systems have questions about treatment and testing, they should contact their water supplier.  Oregon Public Health recommends that people who choose to eat fish from waters where algae blooms are present should remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking since toxins are more likely to collect in these tissues.  Additionally, public health officials advise that people should not eat crayfish or freshwater shellfish harvested from Tenmile Lake while this advisory is in effect.  Exposure to toxins can produce symptoms of numbness, tingling and dizziness that can lead to difficulty breathing or heart problems and require immediate medical attention. Symptoms of skin irritation, weakness, diarrhea, nausea, cramps and fainting should also receive medical attention if they persist or worsen. Children and pets are particularly susceptible.  The public will be advised when the concern no longer exists.   With proper precautions to avoid water contact, people are encouraged to visit Tenmile Lake and enjoy activities such as camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, catch-and-release fishing and bird watching. Boating is safe as long as speeds do not create excessive water spray, which could lead to inhalation risk.  For local information contact the Tenmile Lake Basin Partnership, 541-759-2414.  For health information, contact the Harmful Algae Bloom Surveillance program at 971-673-0400 or www.healthoregon.org/hab; also contact the Oregon Public Health toll-free information line at 1-877-290-6767 or Coos County Health Department at 541-756-2020.

Southwestern readies for student orientation
Local returning and new students are getting ready for the start of the fall term at Southwestern Oregon Community College.  The residence halls at the college and apartments around town will soon be filling up as students from out of the area begin their migration onto the Coos Campus.  The influx signals the start of “Laker Welcome,” New Student Orientation activities for the college.  This year’s theme is “Grow into Southwestern.” Orientation provides all new students--those living on-campus and throughout the community--with the chance to learn how to get help before they need it and to learn more about the college and the local community. It can make a transition into college life much more stress-free and successful.  Following move-in day on Friday, the college will begin introducing this year’s group of incoming students to college life. Kick Off will begin with “The Ultimate Road Trip™: Campus2Career” in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern Oregon Community College Coos Campus. There is no fee to attend thanks to the program’s partners, which include Army ROTC, Bank of America, the United States Navy and Monster.   From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 25, about 40 local businesses and organizations will be stationed in the quad on the Coos Campus to introduce themselves to the new students at the Welcome Expo. There also will be a free barbecue lunch and a series of seminars designed to prepare students for academic, financial and social success in college. Childcare services will be provided Sept. 25 from 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Family Center.  College staff, students and faculty will continue checking students in on Saturday and Sunday leading up to the first day of classes on Sept. 27.  Before classes start, it is vital that students complete several tasks.  Students should do their placement testing (call 541-888-7405 for more information). After testing is complete, students should see their assigned Advisor or an Advisor/Counselor in Stensland to register for classes. Those needing accommodations due to a physical or learning disability should see Susan in the Stensland Educational Support Programs and Services.  The Coos Campus Student First Stop and Bookstore will offer extended hours Monday through Wednesday during the first week of classes.  Information kiosks will also be available to assist people from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first three days of classes.  Anyone with questions regarding “Laker Welcome” should contact Karina Smith at 541-888-7316.  Information and a full Orientation schedule can also be found by visiting www.socc.edu and clicking on “New Student Orientation” in the left-hand menu.

Election preparation
There will be a General Election in Coos County on November 2, 2010.  Coos County ballots will be mailed to all active, registered voters on October 15, 2010.  Voters should receive their ballots October 18-22. 2010.  Military, overseas and out of state ballots were mailed earlier.  If voters have not received their ballot by Friday, October 22, 2010, they should contact the Coos County Election’s office.  The last day for new registrations for this election will be October 12, 2010.  County Elections Director Debbie Heller says she would also like to stress that ballots are not forwarded by the post office, so if a voter has moved or changed a mailing address, they must complete a new registration form to update their address.  The cost of postage to return a Coos County ballot for this election will be 44 cents, or the voters may choose to drop their ballot off at a local drop site location throughout the county.   A list of drop site locations is listed on the county’s website at www.co.coos.or.us.  A new service is available to Oregon voters to track the process of their ballot through the Oregon Secretary of State’s website at www.oregonvotes.org “My Vote”.  Electors may also register or update registration through this site.  A public certification and demonstration of ballot programming and tabulation will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 4:00 PM in the Election office at the Courthouse in Coquille.

Like they did on Tuesday at Springfield, visiting Marshfield needed just about an hour to sweep Willamette in three straight games Thursday night in 5A Midwestern League volleyball in west Eugene.  The Lady Pirates finished the first half of 5A play, and that is the key, with a 4-1 record, while the Wolverines drop to 2-3.  Marist and Churchill also won in three straight to match Marshfield’s record.  The Spartans dropped North Eugene and the Lancers took out Springfield.  The first half of the Midwestern League Hybrid games don’t count towards the over league championship.  Only the second half and the single games with the 6A schools, Thurston, South Eugene and Sheldon, will count towards that trophy.  However, as far as seeding for the 5A playoffs, the first and second half do count among the 5A schools.  So, the Lady Pirates are in a three-way tie headed for the second half.  Marshfield beat Willamette 25-13, 25-15 & 25-18.  Sophomore Brea Mosieur had eight kills and sophomore Alicia Hatzel added 12 digs to lead Marshfield.  The JV team had to come from behind after dropping the first game to the Wolverines 25-20.  The young Lady Pirates then won 25-15 and 15-12.  The JV II team kept its MWL intact with another sweep, 25-20 & 25-11.
