The Marshfield Pirates Boys Varsity Basketball team went into tonights game unranked and emerged as number one in their league. Marshfield played against the Churchill Highlanders who were ranked number five in the league and have been one of Marshfield's toughest rivals for many years. When I asked team capatain Kyle Tedder he said the came out for one reason and that was to win and deffend their home court. Tedder believes that it is important to not lose at your home court becuase it is your house and your turf so you should be giving it all you got. The Pirates came out in the first half hard; they attacked, deffended, accuired turn-overs and points. Dalton Mildburn, number 0, is a six foot six inche sophmore who had an incredible game. By my count i found that Milburn scored around half of the teams points with lay-ups fed to him from key players like Tedder, number 4, and Ty Cutting, another sophmore and number 2. Kudos to you Dalton Milburn. As the middle of the first half came around the score was tied up and both teams were playing hard so that they could get that point. Thanks to senior Joey Morgan, number 14, the Pirates were able to maintane a strong deffense and hard attacks. The best play in the first half i believe was made by sophmore Ty Cutting who stole the ball when a Churchill player failed to catch it and then proceeded to run it down the court and score a three pointer. The first half ended with Pirates 23 and Highlanders 21.
I asked team captain Kyle Tedder what he thinks went well and he replied by saying, "We executed our game plan to come out hard in the first three minutes of the first half and first three minutes of the second half.". That is exactly what they did in the second half scoring 12 points in the first four minutes leaving the Highlanders panting for breath and losing moral. The second half contained a lot more fouls than the first with almost seven free throws for the Pirates. As the clock hit five minutes to go the Pirates had only a four point lead and they were on another free throw. The free throw was being taken by another sophmore named Coltin Thurman, number 15. Thurman made both shots giving the Pirates another two points and boosting their moral. With the moral bosst the Pirates succeded in making two three-pointers in a row and then a beautiful lay-up by Milburn so that with two minutes to go the Pirates had 55 and the Highlanders only has 49. As the clock hit one minute left the game grew tense. Both sides striving for those extra points in hopes of either catching up or staying ahead. They battled with both sides scoring until the clock hit thirty seconds and the game seemed to slow down. During that last thirty seconds the Pirates got two free throws and each person made both shots. When the clock hit fifteen the Pirates just played pass until the clock struck 00:00! The MHS Varsity Boys had won 65 to 54!
