Bay Area Teen Idol “Final Four” decided by small point margin at the Blackberry Arts Festival in Coos Bay
(Coos Bay) – With the summer winding to a close, the final four are set to compete for the title of Bay Area Teen Idol in September. It was 50’s and “Classic Hits” that helped to narrow the field of six Coos County Teens to four in the Premiere Vocal Competition. 14-year-old Ally Putas of Coos Bay took first place for a third week in a row with her version of Brenda Lee’s “Sweet Nothin’s.” Like Lee when Sweet Nothin’s became a hit, Putas is only 14 years old herself. 700 spectators watched as Putas also performed a wonderful rendition of “The Boy from New York City” under the K-DOCK Genre. 14-year-old Marissa Cato performed “The Day the Rains Came” made popular in 1958 and “Be My Baby” to earn her a top three position. Cato has been consistently at the top since the competition started.
15-year-old Corin Wesman of Coquille also had a crowd pleasing rendition of the popular 1955 Kay Star hit “Rock and Roll Waltz” and “Want Ads” to take her place in the top three. 17-Year-Old Sean O’Connor of North Bend has been working his way back up to the top after being there during the first week of the competition. He was praised by Judge Dennis Lindahl for his performance of the Frank Sinatra Classic “All of Me.” It was also his rendition of the Elvis Presley Classic “That’s All Right Mama” that put him ahead of the crowd-pleasing Thaddeus Graham Miller who failed to make it to the finals this year after going the distance last year.
14-year-old Graham-Miller of Bandon, whose voice has dropped at least two notes each week of the competition, has struggled throughout the contest with vocals. But, his dance moves and connection with the audience has helped him with the showmanship portion of the contest. Even Saturday, he brought the audience down with his version and stage moves on “Rock Around The Clock.” 16-year-old Caitlin Mansfield also struggled at Saturday’s semi-final competition forgetting a set of words to Calamity Jane’s “Just Blew in from the Windy City.” Graham-Miller and Mansfield will likely perform at the finals that will be held at the Bay Area Fun Festival September 18th. As will Jerica Smith, the youngest contestant, and others who have been eliminated in the 8 weeks of the competition. All eliminated contestants will also participate in several group songs that will be featured as well.
Judges have said throughout the competition that it comes down to song choice and the interpretation by the soloist to decide who will win the competition. The prize package for the winner is valued at over $2000. The finalist’s repertoire will include three different songs from the contest’s previous genres. Those include Country, Pop, Movie Soundtrack, Disco, Big Band, Swing, 50s or Broadway. Bay Area Teen Idol is sponsored by Bay Area Together for Youth, Fred Meyer, the Commission on Children and Families and K-DOCK Radio. It is a summer drug, alcohol and tobacco free vocal contest that is produced for the community.
